Beginning to Rig – Putting Eyes on Sam

I began rigging Sam by making a control that moves both of the eyes. I then moved that control into position and made another nurbs circle control to control the rotation of the eyes around the head. The important part about the head rotation control is that the pivot of this control has to be in the center of the head so that the eyes move along with it.

I have this eye rig set up so that the head control, controls a locator, that locator controls the eyes control and the eye control controls both of the eyes.


This head rig seems to work well so far; the only problem is that when the eye geometry is smoothed, Maya slows down by a huge amount. I need to make sure that the eye geometry especially not able to be selected as it could make the animator’s job very hard.
